After the recent version of Yahoo messenger with PC to PC calls, MSN has launched the Windows Live messenger, which might not live up to your expectations, but its better from the previous in both design and functions. It's far more customizable, you can make it match your taste, those overloading it with winks and dynamic backgrounds may result in instability. I have re-installed mine a couple of times already, so it's better not to make it too heavy.
